Aspin helps boost business in Scotland - A9/A85 Perth

Perth & Kinross Council’s Perth Transport Futures Project is one of Scotland’s major projects to provide a new road infrastructure addressing key congestion points in the local road network and to provide essential linkages to growth areas. It’s part of an integrated series of measures to address
the City’s long term transportation needs, with the A9/A85 scheme being the first of four phases.
Aspin’s foundations and piling solutions meant that Phase 1 of the project kept to programme while minimising disruption to fast flowing traffic on the A9 dual carriageway and overcoming challenging ground and technical conditions.
Sheet piles were placed in the central reservation of the A9 allowing delicate and rapid excavation work on either side of the narrow central reservation, close to moving traffic. A 15x4.5m cofferdam installed by Aspin also meant that pier foundations for a two span over-bridge across the River
Almond were completed to schedule.
Leading international infrastructure group Balfour Beatty called in Aspin’s McGrattan Piling teams to help ensure safe and on time delivery of two key phases of works on the A9/A85 scheme. The works had to be completed with minimal interruption to traffic and required careful planning.
The Perth Lade (watercourse) required re-routing below the A9 as part of the works. This involved deep excavations adjacent to the fast flowing A9 traffic. To facilitate this, 30m of sheet piles were installed in the tight central reservation for the excavation and construction of the new ‘in situ’ culvert.
SO2 River Almond crossing: A 15x4.5m Aspin cofferdam enabled the excavations to construct the pier foundations for a new bridge over the River Almond where the foundations were below water levels. Sheet piles were inserted within just three metres of running river water with flooding provisions and safely removed when the works were completed.
Aspin’s solutions meant that Balfour Beatty’s work was completed safely, meeting tight deadlines. “The sheet piles allowed us to build in situ at Lade Culvert in the short period of time given to us by the client and install an in-situ culvert with bulk-excavation. This total solution cut down on excavation time. We could not have done it otherwise,” said Balfour Beatty Site Agent Chris Smith.
