Aspin helps Morpeth’s £26m award winning Flood Protection Scheme
Client: Environment Agency, Northumberland County Council
Date/Duration: Completion: Dec 2014
Aspin solutions are helping to secure the future for thousands of people in the North East in the award-winning £26m Morpeth Flood Alleviation scheme for the Environment Agency and Northumberland County Council.
The flood project is designed to reduce the risk of flooding to 1,000 homes and businesses in Morpeth. It’s an innovative scheme which combines in-town defences with an upstream storage area which has the capacity to store 1.4million cubic metres of water – enough for 560 Olympic sized swimming pools.
Aspin’s McGrattan piling solutions were key to delivering the course debris screen that catches large objects such as logs and branches during a flood event, together with a filter system for added protection.
Aspin enlisted the help of partner and piling equipment specialist ABI Equipment to install seven x17m long tubular steel piles (tree poles) of 711mm diameter. This provides the strength and depth needed for the essential debris screen that catches large objects such as logs and trees that
Challenging ground conditions required a high power drilling rig modified for the conditions with an increased torque rotary head of 200kNm to ensure the sacrifical casings were secure in the ground before the piles were placed.
The ‘socket tube’ or bottom casing (slip casing) was augered approximately six metres into the river bed. The steel piles were inserted into the slip casing and vibrated further down to approximately 12 metres below river bed level with five metres standing proud above normal river conditions.
Aspin’s solutions have helped the project to receive wide acclaim as demonstrating best practice for flood alleviation schemes, achieving ‘Project of the Year’ in the prestigious Construction Excellence Awards.
Duncan Wray, Aspin Business Development Manager said: “We successfully deliver robust solutions for all types of water and environmental projects and this is a prime example of true partnerships working in practice on an ambitious engineering scheme. And we’re proud to have played a role
in the scheme that’s achieved recognition for its close working relationships between the partners and with the community which was key to delivering the project successfully.”
