Embankment Stabilisations - Bishopton
Client: Network Rail
Date/Duration: Completed on time, on budget
Aspin’s ground investigations and piling and foundations solutions are widely used across the UK in the rail, civils and highways sectors, a bespoke service for all sizes and types of projects including full design and installation using the company’s own plant and equipment.
At Bishopton near Stratford upon Avon, Network Rail called in Aspin to provide the design and works to stabilise a 100 metre section of embankment that had been causing track quality problems. The embankment showed signs of deep seated rotational failure, a geotechnical problem that applies to steep slopes and/or soft foundation soils.
Aspin’s ground investigations and piling and foundation teams were commissioned to provide the solution.
Located 3km north-west of Stratford between 10 miles 35 chains and 10 miles 40 chains on the Hatton Station to Stratford-upon-Avon line (HAS), there were track quality issues, exacerbated by tree desiccation within poor embankment materials.
Work was planned to minimise the need for future repairs and maintenance over some 100 metres, with track quality monitoring and a permanent way team on site at all times.
The first step was to remove vegetation to allow the pre-boring of 600mm diameter holes to a depth of six metres. This allowed the rapid installation of 97no. 0.305m x 0.305m x 7.50m UCs (King Posts) to support the reinforced concrete panels that retain the reconstructed earthworks. Inert recycled materials were used for the backfill. The toe drainage at the base of the embankment was also re-profiled.
Completed on time and on budget, the works have relieved the pressures on the repair and remediation budget and the whole project was completed within 12 Weeks. The finished result included the installation of rabbit netting and top soiling to allow for the future regeneration of flora and
fauna. Security was also addressed in the programme with the replacement of third party and Network Rail boundary fencing and the addition of new access gates for the site.
With nearly 20 years’ experience in solutions for the rail industry, Aspin has an in-depth understanding of its unique challenges. Services include full design and project management as well as supply of individual services, depending on the scope of the project from major OLE and re-signalling works to inspections and investigations, all supported by the extensive fleet of Aspin’s own specialist plant and equipment.
