A Day In The Life Of...

HR & L&OD Assistant

A day in the life of… HR and L&OD Assistant, Foundations (Hemel Hempstead)

I joined Aspin in September 2016 as an HR and L&OD Assistant. My past HR career has been in corporate hospitality, so thought the civil and rail engineering world would be an exciting new challenge. The role was a new creation within the existing team, and I saw the opportunity to not only develop my own skills, but to develop concrete processes and ensure the smooth running of the HR department.
Aspin offers a wide variety of progression routes, whether through gaining qualifications or working your way up through the ranks. I’ve learnt so much in the short time I have worked here, and cover all areas from processing starters and leavers to maintaining personnel files and organising healthcare cover.
I enjoy working at Aspin as it’s a family-run company that has managed to retain this element whilst continuing to grow. My job is not just a desk job, but is about talking to employees and building relationships throughout the business.

Junior Project Manager

A day in the life of… Junior Project Manager, Foundations (site-based)

I became part of the Aspin family in June 2015 as a PTS site operative. I had recently returned from working abroad in Australia for 3 years where I had worked as a digital marketing business development manager. My return to England marked a change in career direction and ASPIN gave me that opportunity. The role at Aspin in the construction and rail industry was a brand new career for me to pursue. My lack of experience was made up for by my willingness to learn and Aspin’s commitment to supporting and developing staff. This meant I soon progressed in my role and became a valued member of the team on site.

The skills I had learnt as part of my university course (Fire & Leadership BSc Hons) were transferable in a lot of ways to the planning and running of construction projects. My line manager was quick to put these strengths to good use and began to involve me in the preparation of safety critical paper work for projects, procurement of plant, labour and materials and other basic planning tasks. Over time Aspin added to my responsibilities, slowly building my knowledge and exposing me to more and more of the processes involved with planning and running a project. My hard work and Aspin’s commitment to my development allowed me to move into the role of Junior Project Manager.

Aspin is a great company to work for and my journey so far is testament to the fact that if you are willing to show initiative and work hard, Aspin is set up in such a way that these behaviours will be noticed and rewarded. Aspin help their staff to master their strengths and work on their weaknesses. This mantra creates a healthy, happy workforce and maintains Aspin’s position as a market leader.

Office Manager

A day in the life of… Office Manager, McGrattan (Glasgow)

I joined McGrattan Piling Ltd in August 2007 (10-year anniversary this year!). I previously worked as an Office Manager in the housing and hotel management sectors. I saw the McGrattan role as a chance to further my career, gain new skills and work with a fantastic group of people. In 2013, Aspin Group acquired the company and we were added to their existing portfolio.
No two days are the same in the office. My work involves everything from reception to purchase ledger and credit control, stock to health & safety, and dealing with hires - basically ensuring the smooth running of the office. Overall, I enjoy working within the Aspin Group – it makes a real difference how everyone works as a team.

Assistant Operations Manager

A day in the life of… Assistant Operations Manager, RSI (Derby)

I joined RSI in June 2015 shortly after it became part of the Aspin Group and decided to embrace the challenge and develop my career away from inspection work, having been impressed with what I saw and the people I met.

On a personal level, the learning curve has certainly been steep, however I have found support at all levels, developing good professional relationships with several members of the Aspin Group team. I have also been fortunate enough to take part in development workshops, such as the internally run management training days, which are enjoyable as well as informative.

During the last year, that support has helped me realise my own potential and feed that back into RSI, which has grown from a small 5-man team to a company of approximately 20 members of staff and sub-contractors; as such, my responsibilities include management and delivery of southern projects amongst other general duties surrounding the business.

It is without doubt that the foundations of the Aspin Group have allowed RSI to develop and grow, not just in size but also in quality, experience and professionality, making RSI a much stronger company. RSI and the Group as a whole are rapidly growing entities, offering fantastic opportunities to those who are keen to progress and develop themselves and others, led by an ambitious Leadership Team who continue to drive our core values. The direction RSI and the Aspin Group are going is exciting, and I’m proud to be a part of that.

Operations Manager

A day in the life of… Operations Manager, Consulting (Huthwaite)

Having had a limited background in engineering, I was offered a temporary position as an Engineering Technician to help with a peak in the workload. My organisational skills were instantly challenged and I developed other skills quickly. I soon found that no day within this business and industry was ever the same.

Since joining the company in January 2013, Aspin have provided me with many opportunities to advance my career. During my time here, I have worked in project delivery, project management and business development and I have recently been promoted to Operations Manager, responsible for Aspin Consulting’s team in our Derby office.

Within each role I have worked, I have always felt support has been within easy reach. Senior members of staff are friendly, approachable and willing to listen to any problems whether they are work-based or personal. There are also many training opportunities provided through the sharing of knowledge with other staff members, CPD seminars, and college and university courses. Aspin have also allowed me the time to become involved with the Young Rail Professionals which has aided my personal development.

Project Manager

A day in the life of… Project Manager, Foundations (site-based)

I worked my first shift for Aspin in 2003, working as a labourer at weekends to earn extra income. In 2008 after 18 months travelling the world, I began my degree in Civil Engineering, again whilst working for Aspin on the weekends. In 2010 with the experience that I had gained on site, I achieved my degree. Later that year, I began my career in earnest as a Graduate Engineer. At Aspin, you are given the opportunity to develop your skills immediately, whilst the knowledge of working within the industry since 2003 has also helped.

That role at Aspin has since progressed to Project Manager and I was given the opportunity to progress my career in a range of projects over the years including large re-signalling and overhead line projects, retaining walls, slope stabilisation and river erosion works.

Aspin have always been keen to aid my own personal progression and part of that is undertaking a master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering, which I aim to finish in the next 18 months. This will allow me the ability to reach my ultimate goal of Chartered Engineer status. Currently I am working on a large overhead line project in which Aspin is the principal contractor, where I am responsible for the complete project from making sure designs are to a high standard, health and safety on site is adhered to, seeing the project through all the way through to construction, delivery and handback to the client.

As Aspin has grown, the approachable atmosphere remains. I find this is an excellent place to develop your career as there is always a friendly face to help through determination and hard work to develop my own skills. Aspin has afforded me the opportunities over the years to continue developing. As Aspin have a proven track record of developing their own managers of the future, it’s this experience that helps deliver results and maintain their position as a market leader.
