Project Overview

Aspin’s modular platform extension solutions help keep millions of rail users on the move and can cut the timing of works programmes by 75% and more, with less waste on site.

Increasingly demanded at stations across the UK, Aspin has delivered the platform extensions, at Hayes & Harlington Station as part of the Crossrail West stations programme. Due to the ease of installation, Platform 5 extension works were completed in 9 shifts over the Christmas blockade.

The platform extensions at Hayes & Harlington are designed to help transform and speed up rail travel across London and the South East by accommodating the new nine carriage, 200m long Elizabeth Line trains - due to come into service in 2019.

The Solution

Aspin was commissioned to provide platform extensions at Hayes & Harlington Station for platforms 4 and 5. The first phase involved the extension of the already existing platform 5 - carried out during back-to-back shifts over the New Year 2015/16 blockade. Despite limited access to the working
area, overhead lines and challenging ground conditions that required each foundation to be pre-drilled, the works were completed on time and the platform was fully operational by 8 January as required.

The modular platform extensions were installed in just 9 x 12 hr shifts due to their easy-to-assemble modular design. The project was completed using Aspin’s 25t and 35t excavators from the industry-leading range of plant and equipment, together with high power attachments to the RRVs.

The Result

Since the start of this project, more Aspin work has been commissioned at this and other stations.

Aspin’s platform is a pre-cast concrete solution supported on steel piles. They can usually be installed in a single shift and in most weathers as a complete modular and ergonomic solution. The pre-cast slabs incorporate the coping stone, tactile drainage channel and fence fixings. Once the slabs are lifted into position by an RRV, the joints between the slabs are filled with mastic and the fence is erected for a rapid and sustainable platform.

As the platform extensions are constructed off-site the requirement for wet trades is removed and less waste is generated. Reducing the need for transport and labour helps lower carbon emissions and shorter installation times improve safety as less time is spent on track in potentially hazardous conditions. Together with the cost savings that off-site prefabrication brings, this system provides tangible advantages to the railway infrastructure.
