Aspin solutions work on Ferriby to Gilberdyke

Project Overview

A £34.3million (NR Type A) resignalling contract for the route serving the seven main stations on 56km of railway in Yorkshire’s East Riding, commissioned a range of Aspin solutions to help deliver the works on time, on budget. It’s the first UK project to use the Ansaldo STS UK SEI-CLSS
computer-based interlocking technology (CBI) that brings higher reliability and safety.

The main contract works on the Ferriby to Giberdyke line is operated by a consortium between Linbrooke Services Ltd, specialists in consultancy, design and build works in rail, utilities and subsea environments and European rail technology leader Ansaldo STS UK.

Aspin’s ground investigations, piling, design and installation for 48 signal posts, sub and super structures for seven LOC stagings and a rapid piling solution for the new EBI hut which houses the level crossing controller, IP Comms network and signalling interface hardware, all form an important part of the project.

The Solution

The overall objective of the project is to undertake the resignalling and renewal of life-expired assets (some dating back to the 19th Century) on the route between Goole and Hull, including the transfer of operational control to the York ROC. The works will also deliver the signalling and telecommunications works for the renewed elements in preparation for any future electrification of the route from Doncaster to Hull.

The multi-skilled and disciplined Aspin teams delivered a wide range of solutions over 14 weeks, including ground investigations, together with design, supply and installation of 48 signal post foundations for traditional and lightweight structures. Plus seven new LOC staging foundations to house the very latest signalling equipment and switchgear.

The Aspin design and piling teams also responded swiftly when the site identified for the location of the new EBI hut, one of the first of its type to be installed in the UK, had a high groundwater table. The ground investigations team was called back in and piles were designed and supplied to provide high integrity support for the structure including 10 tonnes of builders sand for the 360 excavator that was used as a piling platform.

The Result

The project was one of the largest undertaken by Linbrooke Services Ltd for Network Rail and a first for the consortium partnership of Ansaldo-Linbrooke. It is on schedule to complete on time and delivery within the major project timescales meant that supplier performance from Aspin have been a critical element to the overall project success.

Recognising from earlier works on the project that Aspin’s ground investigations (GI) teams can provide useful data to help minimise overall project costs and determine the best solution from earlier works, Linbrooke Services called the team back to investigate the EBI hut location. It was around 40 metres from the original GI sites and the information determined the pile lengths of 339 at 5.5 metres depth.

“Aspin’s piling solutions have met the brief and most importantly the teams collaborated very well with our teams and possessions planners. They responded particularly well to deliver the essential piling for the new EBI hut on challenging waterlogged ground, providing six piles that give high integrity support for the structure,” said Alan Mason, Linbrooke Services Ltd Senior Project Manager.
