Project Overview

Winner of a coveted TLP award, the £4m, 58 week Carillion project at Bedford Station was one of the first in the UK to use Aspin’s platform extension solutions and recycled steel tubular piled foundations. The Carillion/Aspin solution saved an estimated £157k and minimised disruption to the train operators and end consumers.

The build time was half that associated with conventional methods with improved sustainability and significantly reducing the health and safety risks for operatives.

“Using pre-cast platform extensions minimises risk and greatly speeds up rail projects, saving time and money. Instead of taking three months, 93m of platform surface was completed here in just 27 hours,” explained Will Temperley, Senior Project Engineer, Aspin.

The Solution

Aspin was engaged by Carillion to deliver a bespoke modular platform extension to three platforms at Bedford station with a limited foundation footprint and needing rapid installation.

Modular platform units were delivered to site in sections and assembled onto the precast reinforced beams and driven steel tubular piles. At the same time, limited track access issues and poor ground conditions were overcome. The weight of each element was also limited for installation by RRV where overhead lines restricted the use of mobile cranage.

93m of platform surface was completed in a 27 hour possession, work which would usually take three months. Carillion’s civil build programme, including the foundations, beams, slabs, fencing and lighting, was completed in around eight weeks.

The Result

The innovative approach to design and installation delivered by Aspin contributed to significant benefits for Carillion’s Sustainability Strategy, ‘Positive Outcomes’.

• Reduced carbon and waste; fewer journeys, saving an estimated 15 lorry movements and 320 tonnes of concrete.
• Reduced safety risk; pre-fabricated platforms and unique pile foundations reduced the number of people hours.
• Time saving; Aspin helped Carillion deliver 93m of platform surface in a 27 hour possession, work which would usually take three months.
• Design; all facets of station platforms have the lighting columns, fence, trash screen brackets and drainage systems built in, improving quality and aesthetics.
• Life cycle cost; faster installation with no need for remedial works.
• Cost; significant efficiencies on possession costs estimated at £157k.
